A thermoelectric power company in Brazil had our older model Simpliport® 180 gages installed and decided to upgrade to our newer model — keeping the illuminators that were still in good condition rather than replacing the entire assembly outright. A Different Kind of Upgrade Story
Most Simpliport 180 upgrades we've covered involve a facility moving away from an older gage technology entirely — a traditional color-strip gage, a competitor's product, or aging equipment from decades past. This one is different: it's an existing Simpliport 180 customer upgrading from an older generation of the same product line to the current model.
That distinction matters. It reflects ongoing product development within the Simpliport line itself, and it gives existing customers a clear upgrade path as newer models become available, rather than leaving them to either stick with an aging original installation indefinitely or start over with a completely different product.
Why Reusing Illuminators Made Sense
Rather than replacing every component during this upgrade, the plant kept the illuminators that were still in good working condition. This is a practical, sensible approach to upgrading: if a specific component is still performing reliably, there's no operational or safety reason to discard and replace it purely because a newer overall model exists.
This kind of selective upgrade — replacing what needs replacing while retaining components that are still sound — reflects the modular nature of a well-designed gage system, where individual components can be assessed and addressed independently rather than forcing an all-or-nothing replacement decision.
