Most manufacturers provide a torque specification and then state, "values are based on lubricated threads." What Galling Actually Is

Galling is a form of wear that occurs when two metal surfaces slide against each other under pressure - similar metals, especially stainless steel against stainless steel, are particularly prone to it. Under friction and pressure, microscopic high points on the mating surfaces can weld together and tear, roughening the surface further and making the fastener increasingly difficult to turn, sometimes seizing entirely.
