Many low-pressure package boilers use tubular glass gages as a means for monitoring level on their Low Water Cut Off/Pump Controllers. These boilers typically operate below 250 WSP (working steam pressure). It's a common setup — but tubular glass carries a risk that's often overlooked: it's susceptible to chipping or breaking, and as a result can be potentially unsafe even in these low-pressure steam applications.
Why Low-Pressure Doesn't Mean Low-Risk
There's a natural assumption that lower operating pressure means lower risk from level gage failure. But the risk with tubular glass isn't purely a function of operating pressure — it's a function of the glass tube's inherent fragility. A tubular glass gage can chip or crack from mechanical impact, thermal shock, or simple age-related wear, regardless of how modest the boiler's operating pressure is. And when it does fail, the consequence is the same regardless of pressure class: loss of reliable water level indication on a Low Water Cut Off/Pump Controller — the exact safety device responsible for shutting the boiler down before it runs dry.

The Low Water Cut Off (LWCO) is one of the most critical safety devices on a steam boiler — it's designed to shut down the boiler (or the burner/pump feeding it) if water level drops to an unsafe point, preventing dry-firing and the equipment damage or safety hazard that results. When the level gage feeding into this system is a fragile tubular design, the reliability of the entire safety chain depends on a component more prone to failure than it needs to be.
Upgrading to an armored reflex gage doesn't change how the LWCO functions — it strengthens the physical reliability of the component that helps operators and the safety system trust the reading it's acting on.
